working with the elderly

Research has shown that singing is good for the memory, as well as an incredibly social activity. I have developed a number of strands to work with the elderly -

  • Singing with the elderly - a group of volunteers comes to the venue, usually a care home, and sings with the residents. This is not about performing, but rather about encouraging singing in a very relaxed and natural way, with the residents being encouraged to join in.
  • The Alzheimer's Society runs "Singing for the Brain" sessions, which I can lead at local centres etc.
  • Music making and singing with the elderly - this is a new opportunity that has just started to develop in the area. Specially tailored for the elderly, these sessions are similar in some respects to my choir work or other singing workshops, and run in care homes or drop in centres.
